How to keep a laptop battery efficient?

It is said that letting a laptop plugged to the AC with the laptop battery in can damage the battery. Is it really better for the long term battery-life to keep on charging and emptying it?
i search some data.and get the best answer as follow,i hope it can help anyboday who has the same question.

While not optimum… I don’t think it’s a huge problem given your convenience. Some say it may not last as long.

Exercise the laptop Battery. Do not leave a charged battery dormant for long periods of time. Once charged, you should at least use the notebook battery at least once every two to three weeks. Also, do not let a Li-On battery completely discharge. (Discharing is only for older batteries with memory effects)

finally,My husband uses 3 year old hp pavilion dv1000 battery and we've left it plugged in most of the time. Still works great and the battery holds a charge.
